Highlight: Strategic Redeployment

It's time to change course.

That's why today we ask the president, his handpicked Iraq Study Group (led by former Secretary of State James Baker and former Indiana congressman Lee H. Hamilton), and congressional leaders to consider our reasoned, pragmatic plan to strategically redeploy our military forces in Iraq and around the region to fight our terrorist enemies in the most effective and most lethal fashion possible.

One year ago the Center for American Progress issued its first report calling for a responsible exit from Iraq as part of a balanced global strategy to make Americans safer. We reiterated that call six months later as subsequent events only underscored the need to act on our proposals. Today, the situation in Iraq is even more dire.

Violence in Iraq is spiraling out of control as it turns inward, with sectarian killings surpassing deaths from terrorist bombings and militias splintering the country.

The Diet Industry: A Big Fat Lie

Like psychic readings and astrology hotlines, the weight-loss industry sells hope to desperate people.

Americans spend $40 billion a year on weight-loss programs and products. They answer Jenny Craig's enticement to "lose 20 pounds for just $20" ("plus the cost of food") or Trimspa's offer of a seven-day supply of chocolate Hoodia weight-loss supplements for $24.95.

We buy books and magazines that offer the insightful revelation that we overeat because we're bored. There are publications that promote weight loss via "food combining" or a diet that corresponds to blood type.

Most offensive are alleged fitness experts who issue such advice as: "Keep your nose out of carrots, bunny. They're full of sugar. Pears, too—pure sugar." Meanwhile, they recommend chemical-laden diet soft drinks and salt-choked low-calorie frozen meals.

"Gatorade is a winning brand with a proven formula and the science to back it up. That's why I wanted to partner with them. I'm eager to launch my first signature product in a few months and look forward to developing additional sports performance beverages with Gatorade in the coming years."

The first product, Gatorade Tiger, is a Gatorade Thirst Quencher subline that will be launched in March 2008.

Chocolate: Truth and consequences

Before the Food Guide Pyramid, there were four food groups. The mug I use at work advertises my dietary approach quite clearly: Chocolate-the Fifth Basic Food Group.

I eat chocolate every day, which may come as a surprising confession. Im as happy as other chocolate lovers are to learn that chocolate does have a healthy place in our diet, though sometimes the facts do get stretched to fit that chocolate craving.

Coming Soon: SR to Release E-mail Exchanges ... (Not so fast...)

I know many of you have wanted to discuss the latest Kootenai County Prosecutor Office scandal involving county e-mails. There's always tomorrow, I guess. But I'm starting to wonder if the big cable boys from back East are taking care of business in North Idaho? We should all demand that they reduce our bills for the service lost today. BTW, I'm still waiting to post the e-mails we received yesterday. I might have to do it from home, if I can. You should check our regular Web site in the interim. It'll appear first there. Now, your Wild Card ...
