Recalled beef puts Snohomish County schools to work
At lunchtime on Friday, Barbara Lloyd helped toss half a ton of hamburger patties, beef Rib-B-Que, beef crumbles, meatballs and country beef steak strips into the garbage piles at the Mountlake Terrace transfer station.
The meat, intended for school lunches in Edmonds, was taken from freezers as part of the nation's largest meat recall ever. Schools in Washington have until Monday to destroy the recalled beef, which came from a California slaughterhouse.
"I personally was throwing the cases," said Lloyd, food service director for the Edmonds School District. "It's a sickening feeling to watch all of this good nutrition go down the drain because something in the pipeline went wrong, but it had to be done."
Hundreds of thousands of pounds of beef are being dumped in landfills, covered with bleach or, in some cases, sent to plants that may process them into dog food or glue.
BASC: National Gundog Conference returns to Warwickshire
Gundog experts and enthusiasts from across the UK will be coming to Warwickshire in April to speak at the National Gundog Conference. The main speakers will be Anne Greeves and Bill Lambert from the Kennel Club, Richard McNicol who is an expert on pointers and BASC's David lIsley. There will also be mini workshops reflecting the advancement in medical care, nutrition, training methods and equipment and supporting organisations. The event, which has been organised by the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC), will take place at Warwickshire College in Leamington Spa on Sunday 27 April 2008. Multi-car accident closes I-5
The Washington State Patrol has closed southbound Interstate 5 south of Tumwater because of a massive pileup that's left at least 25 cars damaged and at least one person hospitalized. Trooper Brandy Kessler said traffic was at a standstill for at least 10 miles north of the crash site, which started about six miles south of Tumwater. "It's just a huge mess going southbound," Kessler said Friday afternoon. "I can't even count how many collisions I've seen." The chain reaction crash began around 1:30 p.m. when an 80-year-old woman rear-ended a logging truck, Kessler said. An oncoming semi was able to stop before striking the woman's car, but was then struck by a third big rig. A fourth semi veered into a concrete barrier to avoid the collision, thoroughly snarling traffic.
