Ironically, the Supreme Court struck down the porn part of the law soon after it was passed. But the exemption for Internet publishers stands. The U.S. Supreme Court has shown zero interest in entertaining a challenge to it, Goldman says, much less overturning it.

Goldman believes Congress made a good decision. "It's very hard to put online service providers in the role of judge," he says. "If we asked online service providers to do this, they'd take the path of least resistance. They'd take the content down. And if they did that, we would see a chilling extinction of negative feedback about products and services in the marketplace."

And so Web publishers today have the freedom to publish real, uncensored customer reports — and, while they're at it, to publish false information.

Update On Jungle Yellow Fever (JYF) In Brazil, Paraguay, And Argentina

Yellow fever is a zoonosis of the tropical regions of South America and Africa, which occurs in two distinct epidemiologic cycles: jungle and urban. In the jungle cycle, the virus spreads among monkeys and humans, who may be infected when they enter the jungle and are bitten by mosquitoes infected with the yellow fever virus. Urban yellow fever has long been eradicated from the Americas, with the last cases occurring in Brazil in 1942.

Since the 1970s, the area where jungle yellow fever (JYF) cases have occurred has been restricted to the northern region of the South American continent. From 1985 to December 2007, 3,837 cases of JYF have been reported, with 2,229 deaths.

In 2007 and the beginning of 2008, Brazil reported an intense and extensive epizootic of Jungle Yellow Fever in an area encompassing 6 states (Goiás, the Federal District, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Tocantins, and São Paulo).

Council nixes building cat room at shelter

A proposal to build a new room for cats at Butte's animal shelter raised questions Wednesday evening about euthanasia and operating costs.Commissioners voted 8-4 to deny a request to build a second "free-roaming" room for cats at the Chelsea Bailey Animal Shelter, 699 Centennial Ave., but said they could reconsider the request after a director is hired.An ordinance restricting fireworks in city limits also was introduced and referred to the judiciary committee, which meets next week.Commissioners Cindi Shaw, Charlie O'Leary, Jim Fay and John Sorich supported the shelter project.Commissioners voting against the project said they wanted to put the request made by shelter director Erin Wall on hold until a new director is hired.The job posting for the director position ends Friday, and a new director could be hired around the end of the month, said Public Works Director John VanDaveer.

Former Slovenian president dies of cancer

Former Slovenian President Janez Drnovsek succumbed to cancer at his home overnight at the age of 57, his office said on Saturday.

Drnovsek did not seek reelection and handed over the presidency to his successor Danilo Tuerk last December as he had been suffering from cancer since 1999.

Drnovsek, who served as prime minister for most of the 1990s and president in the last five years, was the main driver in Slovenia's transition to a market economy and entry into the European Union and NATO.

His battle for life started with a surgery to remove one of his kidneys in 1999. When the modern medicine could not stop the spreading of cancer in late 2003, he resorted to a reclusive lifestyle on vegetarian food in a village. Yet, the new way of life and healers disappointed him.
